SEE THE LIGHT – LAMP-POSTS GET YOU FIT

If the New Year's fitness revolution resolution has lasted this long, then award yourself a gold medal.

If it hasn't – or it never started – then ExtremeGB.com, the UK's leading online retailer of outdoor and adventure goods, has some suggestions, starting with those well-known items of fitness equipment... lamp-posts.

"Taking that first step towards getting fit and staying fit is the biggest challenge. Let's face it, for some people a walk or a run can be boring. It's not necessarily the pain, it can be the boredom of it," said Nicola Sharlott of ExtremeGB.com.

"So we suggest breaking down your new-found fitness regime into two sections: getting started, then keeping it going.

"Unfortunately, sedentary people see highly-togged-up runners jogging by, take one look at their head-to-toe sports gear and think about all the hassle of getting it, then getting it on.

"But you can make fitness sneak up on you: don’t worry about the gear initially, just think about the breakthrough. For instance, we're a nation obsessed with parking right outside where we want to be, then driving round in circles for twenty minutes waiting for a space.

"Why not simply park a few hundred yards away –in plenty of space and where there is no parking charge – and then walk briskly to where you want to be? If it's a regular trip, say to the bank or post office, then each time you go park just a few yards further away, maybe the next lamp-post along each week. You don't need the running gear, but you will feel the benefit.

"On day one it might be a brisk 200-yard-walk, but after a couple of months you might have progressed to a one-mile round trip – a brisk 15 or 20 minute walk: the same time you spend looking for a parking spot, but with the benefit of some light exercise.

"That's plenty enough to stay in decent condition, but it's also the stage at which slipping on the running shoes may come a little easier – that slight improvement in fitness through upping the walking ante means that you won't be as immediately breathless had you jumped straight off the sofa and gone for a run.

"Once you’ve progressed on to longer walks or runs, that's when you need the right sort of kit – and maybe something to stave off the boredom, also maybe to monitor your progress."
