Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Expedition Kit

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme involves participation in an overnight expedition at Bronze, Silver and Gold Award levels.

These expeditions can be very enjoyable as well as challenging but you need the right equipment to make the most of the event and to have the best time.

Outdoorgb has a selection of items that are well worth taking with you based on the DofE Award Scheme's own recommendations.

  • Silver Award:
  • Plan, train for and complete a 3-day (2-night) expedition

Selected entries from the list of 20 DofE Expedition Conditions

  • 1. Your expedition must be by your own physical effort, without any motorised or outside assistance.
  • 2. Your expedition must be unaccompanied and self-sufficient.
  • 5. You must be properly equipped for your expedition.
  • 8. You and your team must plan and organise your expedition.
  • 14. Your overnight accommodation should be camping.
  • 16. Your expedition should normally take place between the end of March and the end of October.
  • 19. You should cook and eat a substantial meal each day.

“Where Bronze and Silver expeditions are proposed in surroundings more demanding than those recommended, participants must be trained and equipped to enable them to meet any potential hazards.

Wild country is defined as an area remote from habitation. DofE expeditions should be through, rather than over, wild country – it’s all about solitude not altitude.”
