A NEW AND CORRECT CHART OF ENGLAND, SCOTLAND AND IRELAND, c1746
Published by R.Mount and T.Page
This reproduction is taken from an original document, held within the Archives of the UK Hydrographic Office, Taunton , Somerset .
The publishing house of Mount and Page was closely connected with the production of the later editions of the important 'The English Pilot' series, initiated by John Seller and John Thornton. The publication had a long life with new editions constantly appearing as the work was revised and brought up to date. Sometimes the plates were altered, sometimes entirely new plates were engraved. No library has anything like a complete set, and most of the volumes are rare, particularly the early issues.
This chart of the British Isles is of an older style than the publication date suggests. It is reminiscent of the work of Dutch cartographers such as Peter Goos, who was working in the mid seventeenth century. It is decorated by the coats of arms of the Kingdoms of England , Scotland and Ireland .
