Where appropriate, all scale ship models are constructed with hardwood using the plank-on-frame technique and built to scale using ships' drawings. The models use cotton sails and rigging and in the case of the larger vessels are suitable for use as exhibits in galleries or museums. Many models are available in Large and Small sizes with both versions offering the same level of detail.

Stocks of most models are held but you should allow up to 8 weeks for some of the larger models. If you have specific enquiries for other ships, please contact us. Models are shipped all over the world in secure packaging at very reasonable prices.

Derrflinger: Ship's History

Original specifications: Type: Urka; Hull: Wood; Built; Holland; Year: 1595

At the height of their popularity, 80 Urkas were registered under the flag of the city of Hoorn.

The vessel was built to a lightweight design despite its appearance and had a large cargo-carrying capacity (170 tons) that could be readily handled by a small crew.

These ships were generally 33 metres in length with a beam of nearly 7 metres giving a noatably narrow deck. The weapons they carried were many and varied. Until 1683, they had six 4-pound guns and two 2 pounders, but sometimes they carried as many as 16 guns.

They made many voyages to West Africa to the Shetland Islands in September 1691, using the longest route in order to avoid the French pirates in the English Channel.
