A high-sensitivity SiRFstarIV GPS chip gives accurate short and long interval readings whilst saving power with the ability to go into sleep mode, allowing for faster satellite connection than from a cold state. The Suunto Ambit has full 100-point waypoint functionality, an invaluable navigational aide and a unique 3-dimensional compass. Unlike a conventional compass, the Suunto Ambit does not need to be held level but will give a reliable bearing even during the most violent pitch and yaw. The Suunto Ambit is able to give coordinates in a number of different formats and, for military use, the compass can be switched between mils and degrees.
The barometric altimeter gives exact readings by taking information from pressure as well as GPS, and gives the Suunto Ambit the ability to measure vertical speed as well as horizontal. Furthermore, keeping an eye on the barometer and temperature readings can alert you to changing weather conditions.
The high-performance pedigree of the Suunto Ambit has a battery to cope, lasting up to 30 days in watch mode but able to give a 15-hour constant life on maximum burn (during short interval GPS tracking, in training mode). However, forget expensive battery replacements as the lithium-ion battery is fully rechargeable and lithium means it is also more reliable in low temperatures than a conventional battery.

The Suunto ANT Heart Rate Belt can be bought separately and combined with the Suunto Ambit for greater functionality as a training watch - ‘Peak Training Effect’ measurement giving a detailed debrief of session impact and ‘Recovery Time’ keeping a record of base fitness levels.
With movescount.com you can update your Ambit with the latest software for free. On September 27th 2012, Suunto launched software version 1.8 for the Suunto Ambit bringing greater on-screen navigation. You can now download routes straight to your ambit and share your own online at movescount.com. Other improvements include a new local coordinate system, GPS time keeping, chrono function, constant backlight option as well as five new display languages.
The latest update available from the 28th November 2012 makes the Ambit ANT+ compatible - but it also gives Ambit users the ability to do something really exciting. The Suunto App Zone allows Ambit users to create their own apps using all of the information collected by the watch.
