Borobudur: Wooden Ship Model

Indonesia's indigenous type of rigging is the layar (sail) tanjaq. Perhaps the oldest representations of this type of boat are seen in several carvings on the walls of the famous 9th-century temple of Borobudur and Chinese, Arab and European sources since the earliest times of foreign contact speak of the peculiar rectangular tanjaq as the typical sails of the ‘Islands Below the Wind’.

During recent decades, several expeditions with tanjaq-rigged boats have proved their abilities, the most recent one a voyage of a replica of a ‘Borobudur’ ship along historic routes of Indian Ocean trade from Indonesia to Madagascar and Ghana in 2003-2004.

Today, this type of sail is in use on some smaller fishing craft only.

The Borobudur Model Ship was originally researched and built for the Hong Kong Maritime Museum.

The Museum requested an antique look for this model.

Where appropriate, all scale ship models are constructed with hardwood using the plank-on-frame technique and built to scale using ships' drawings. The models use cotton sails and rigging and in the case of the larger vessels are suitable for use as exhibits in galleries or museums. Many models are available in sizes 1 or 3/4 with both models offering the same level of detail.

Stocks of most models are held but you should allow up to 8 weeks for some of the larger models. If you have specific enquiries for other ships, please contact us. Models are shipped all over the world in secure packaging at very reasonable prices.
