The Armillary Sphere Paperweight is made of polished, machined brass that is mounted on hardwood to make a pleasing mantelpiece ornament.
Armillaries are ancient astronomical instruments formerly used to track the date, the time and various celestial happenings throughout the year. In a simplified version, an armillary is also known as the sundial but the armillary sundial differs from the garden sundial in that it is three-dimensional in its presentation and is more accurate in its demonstration of the time.
It has a fixed gnomon style that is aligned with the Earth's rotational axis and a spherical shadow-receiving surface that is aligned equi-distant from the axis.
