Modern 12-Point Crampons, with their front pointing, have done away with the traditional method of step cutting.
Apart from the number of points, Crampons can be divided into two main types: Rigid Crampons and Hinged Crampons.
Rigid Crampons are used primarily for steep ice climbing.
Hinged Crampons are more versatile and, because they flex, Hinged Crampons are comfortable to walk in although for Ice Climbing a stiff-soled pair of boots must be worn because too much flex is not good.
Another variation to look out for within Technical Ice Climbing Crampons is the choice of mono points or dual points, which will depend on the preference of the climber and of course the situation.
