Crampons

Crampons help climbers ascend by allowing them to kick into the ice. Modern 12-Point Crampons, with their front pointing, has done away with the traditional method of step cutting. 10-Point Crampons do still exist in a few models, though their use is in decline.

12-Point Crampons are more frequently used now days, however, 10-Point Crampons are suitable for easy glacial walking.

Apart from the number of points, Crampons can be divided into two main varieties: Rigid Crampons and Hinged Crampons. Rigid Crampons are used primarily for steep Ice Climbing. Hinged Crampons are more versatile and because they flex; Hinged Crampons are comfortable to walk in, though for Ice Climbing, a stiff soled pair of boots must be worn because too much flex is not good.

Another variation within Technical Ice Climbing Crampons to look out for is mono points or dual points: this will depend on the preference of the climber and of course the situation. Many climbers find Mono-Point Crampons easier to kick into the ice with.
