Admiralty RYA Chart Plotter
| |
The UKHO and the Royal Yachting Association have teamed up to make electronic navigation more accessible to all and to provide the leisure mariner with an easy means to get started. The result of this collaboration is the Admiralty RYA Electronic Chart Plotter; the perfect introduction to electronic navigation.
Now this product no longer expires!
New or improved features:
- Real-Time Navigation is at your fingertips: Simply connecting the chart plotter to a GPS enables users to track their vessel across the chart in real time, an important safety feature which ultimately frees up time.
- Enhanced Route Planning: Use the tidal height and stream data to automatically correct a planned route and provide course-to-steer (CTS).
- Easy Chart Selection: Simply by right-clicking on the chart, the user can easily select the next larger/smaller/same-scale chart at the cursor position.
- Chart Expiry and Updating: The charts contained in each pack do not expire. However, it is recommended that users update their system regularly.
- Improved Chart Coverage: This can simply be extended by purchasing additional CDs for the sailing areas around the UK and Republic of Ireland.
- Tidal Height Prediction: This can be made for standard and secondary ports contained within each chart park simply by clicking on the tidal icon on screen.
Other features include: easy waypoint entry; easy route creation; avoidance zones; electronic bearing and distance lines; directional planning arrows and large buttons. The program is designed to run on the following Microsoft Windows operating systems: NT version 4, Service Pack 4, 2000 and XP with a minimum function PC spec of 200 Mhz processor, 64 Mb free RAM, CD rom, 300 Mb free disk space and 16-bit colour display - so there is no need for expensive computers on board!
In addition, the RYA has officially endorsed the Admiralty RYA Chart Plotter as it is aware of the importance of safe navigation and making electronic navigation more accessible, especially to yachtsmen. |

Admiralty RYA Chart Plotter Features
The Admiralty RYA Chart Plotter core design feature is its simplicity. UKHO have included only the few tools
vital for electronic navigation. This, together with the straightforward
software, provides a simple and intuitive screen layout, making
it an ideal starting place to gain experience in this method
of navigation.
ARCS Charts and Software on a single CD: Each CD
comes with about 15 ARCS charts and navigational software
packaged on a single CD to provide coverage of a popular cruising
area. The beauty of using an ARCS chart is that each one is
taken from the original chart base used to create our Admiralty
paper charts. This means that they share the familiar image
and use the same internationally recognised symbols.
Real-Time Navigation: Link a laptop to your GPS and
watch as your vessel tracks across the chart. Knowing exactly
where you are at all times is one of the key advantages of electronic
navigation, freeing up time to enjoy your cruising or concentrate
on racing. This function also allows power boats to update their
course across the chart faster and to look further ahead.

Navigation Features: Everything you need to
provide a good starting point in electronic navigation. |
Easy Waypoint Entry: Either type in the coordinates or ‘point and click’
to place an unlimited number of waypoints.
Easy Route Creation: Using the Add-to-Chart feature, all you have to do is:
- Select the route file
- Select Add to Chart
- ‘Point and click’
The route will automatically
link itself in the order created, entering waypoints with names
and positional references. Editing the route is just as easy.
This program allows a maximum of 10 routes to be stored.
Route Plan:
The route plan is automatically created at the same time as the
route, providing a printable summary of information for each leg
such as distance, time, bearing, course to steer and so on. This
allows you to plan your route from the comfort of your own home.
Avoidance Zones: This function allows you
to plot warning zones on your chart. As your vessel moves into a
warning zone, an alarm will sound.
Electronic Bearing and Distance Lines:
This feature allows you to draw bearing and distance lines between
two fixed points or between your vessel and a fixed point; providing
information such as bearing, reciprocal bearing and distance.
Directional Panning Arrows and Large Buttons:
These facilitate easy navigation and uncomplicated use at sea.
Chart Quality and Clarity: Produced directly from Admiralty digital chart bases, ARCScharts offer
both unparalleled clarity and quality of image reproduction. If
you’ve been navigating with Admiralty paper charts, you’ll
feel instantly at home when you look at an ARCS chart.
Upgrade Path: This software and ARCS charts package
has been developed in conjunction with the RYA to provide the perfect
introduction to electronic navigation. As you gain experience from
using this software, or as you begin to require greater functionality
or wider chart coverage, there are a number of excellent software
packages available that are compatible with the ARCS Skipper product.
Hardware Requirements: The minimum functional specification
for a PC or laptop to run the software is:
- 200 Mz Processor
- 64 Mbytes RAM
- CD rom
- 100 MB free disk space (for software and one Chart Pack)
- For best performance, a 500 Mz processor
or faster and 128 MB of RAM is recommended
Chart Coverage: Take your pick from 5 different
popular sailing areas around the UK. To extend coverage, simply purchase
the CD for the area you require.
