Guide to 12V Plugs and connections

12v products range from basic necessities right through to products that add a little bit of luxury to life out on the road and in a mobile environment. Connecting your 12v products however can sometimes be tricky, as unfortunately there is no "standard" when it comes to plugs and sockets in vehicles. Below are a list of the common plugs and connections associated with 12V products.

Known as a Din Plug but often called a Continental Plug or Hella Plug, this type of plug can usually be found fitted to trucks and some European (German/French/Dutch) built vehicles.

This is the socket that accomodates the exposed brass end of the Din plug

Known as a cigarette lighter plug, this is the most common type of connector used in vehicles.

A cigarette lighter plug fits into this socket. A traditional auxilary power socket found on the dash of most cars, this socket is often simply refered to as a cigarette lighter.

To avoid confusion and help with compatibility, many 12v products now come with a Universal Plug, (right), with the addition of the red screw-on cap, a Din plug will become a cigarette lighter plug.
